Science Summer Fun!

by Katherine Ayers

The St. Jude Cancer Education and Outreach Program partners with the Shelby County Schools Summer Learning Academies to offer 5th-grade students a weeklong dive into the science, research, and treatment of pediatric cancers.

MRI Analysis

During the camp, students review patient case stories and analyze key pieces of data, such as MRI results (pictured above) or a patient blood smear, to diagnose disease.

Students model DNA replication to better understand how drugs target and kill cancer cells. In doing so, they also consider the challenges and pitfalls that arise as scientists attempt to design better drugs to treat childhood cancers that eliminate unwanted side effects.
