Cristel V. Camacho, Ph.D.

Brandon Cox

Cristel was born in León, Nicaragua and raised in Abilene, TX. She graduated from Hardin-Simmons University in 2005 with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and spent a year abroad at the University of Cambridge.


Cristel then joined the Cancer Biology graduate program at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX where she completed her doctoral degree in May of 2012. Cristel joined St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as a postdoctoral fellow. Her research in the lab of Dr. Peter J. McKinnon focuses on the tumorigenic impact of DNA repair deficiencies in the central nervous system.


Outside of the laboratory, Cristel enjoys traveling, especially exploring her dear Nicaragua, which she visits often. Living in Memphis, she has come to enjoy the outdoors and visits various parks with her husband, Evan, and two pugs, Kali and Luna.
